Golan Heights is a disputed area, which Israel and Syria consider to be their territory. Before 1967, it was considered part of Syria, bit Israeli army took most of that territory during the Six-Day War in June 1967. A DMZ was set to divide the conflicting sides in this area.

Knesset recognized the country's authority over this strategically important area in 1981, but the UN did not endorse this decision.

In May 2018, the U.S. moved the Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Thus, the White House recognized Jerusalem the capital city of Israel.
