On Saturday, January 20, Ukraine commemorates the memory of defenders of the Donetsk airport who fought there in January 2015.
Battles for establishing control over the Donetsk international airport, which had a strategic importance, continued between Ukrainian forces and illegal armed formations from May 26, 2014, until January 21, 2015.
Special forces of the 3rd separate regiment, fighters of 79, 80, 81, 95 individual airmobile and 93 separate mechanized brigades, 57 separate motorized infantry brigade, 90 separate airmobile and 74 separate reconnaissance battalions fought in the airport and in the adjacent village of Pisky, as well as Dnipro1 regiment soldiers, fighters of the Volunteer Ukrainian Corps and many others.
Many of them were given state awards, some - posthumously.
58 "cyborgs" were killed on January 18-21, 2015, because of the explosion of the airport terminal.
On January 21, 2015, a decision was made to withdraw Ukrainian servicemen from the new terminal, since this facility was completely destroyed and was not suitable for defense.
According to official data, more than 200 military men were killed while defending Donetsk airport.
After the destruction of the old and new airport terminals, the defense of which lasted 242 days, the Ukrainian army and volunteers keep the defense of other airport buildings, and the surrounding villages.
