From January to September 2018, 138 orphans from Ukraine were adopted by US citizens. This is reported by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine.
The ministry noted that in recent years, the number of children from our country adopted by Americans has been decreasing. In 2014, US citizens adopted 431 children, in 2015 - 299, in 2016 - 301, and for 9 months of the current year - 138.
Of the total number of Ukrainian children adopted by Americans, almost half are adolescents, and a quarter are children with special needs.
The Ministry of Social Policy noted that the United States is one of the main strategic partners of Ukraine in the field of adoption of children, and the number of US citizens wishing to adopt a child in Ukraine remains consistently high.
According to official data, from 2008 to 2017, 27,000 orphans were adopted in Ukraine, for almost 19,000 of them citizens of other countries became new parents.
We note, at the moment, according to the Family Code, the citizens of Ukraine have the priority right to adopt a child. In particular, if another child is raised in a family, if the person is the spouse of the mother or father of the child, if several children are adopted - brothers / sisters, if it concerns relatives of the family. In addition, preference is given to the couple. A child can be adopted by a foreigner if there is no citizens of Ukraine who would like to adopt him.
The code states that the adoptive parents can not be people of the same sex.
A foreigner can adopt a child from Ukraine if the child at least a year ago was registered by the Ministry of Social Policy and has reached five years - however, there are cases when this may happen earlier.
