Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin took part in the opening of the bust of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko on October 29 in the Romanian town of Sighetu Marmatiei. According to Foreign Ministry press service, Shevchenko bust was installed for the funds of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania.
The Ministry clarified that Klimkin met with his counterpart Lazar Comanescu during a one-day visit to Romania. They discussed the issues of bilateral cooperation, in particular aspects of cross-border and regional cooperation, infrastructure development of Ukrainian-Romanian state border and the problems of national minorities, as well as continued support for Romania's European integration efforts of Ukraine.
Shevchenko is a well-known Ukrainian poet. He was also famous as an artist, writer, ethnographer, and revolutionary democrat. Shevchenko's literary heritage, in which poetry played the central role, in particular the collection Kobzar, is considered to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and mostly the literary Ukrainian language itself.
