The construction works on the first spent nuclear fuel storage in Ukraine began on Thursday, April 27. The object will be located in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. Ostap Semerak, the minister of Environment and Natural Resources said that as quoted by his press service.
‘I reckon it is one of the most essential projects for Ukraine. It will provide safe storage of the spent nuclear fuel over the long period. Currently, we’re forced to keep it in Russia – and pay about $ 200 million annually for that. Construction of such facility in Ukraine will save us the trouble. The exclusion zone has all the opportunities to implement such project, the construction works will adhere to the world’s highest standards of environmental safety,’ the Ukrainian official said.
