“Two deaths in connection with the omicron variant of the coronavirus were reported in South Korea on Monday,” Yonhap reports with reference to officials.

According to the Gwangju City Health Department, both people were over 90 years old. Their tests for Omicron strain showed a positive result after death.

These are the first fatalities in South Korea due to the Omicron strain. The exact causes of death of patients are currently being investigated by health authorities.

Earlier, Bulgaria confirmed the spread of the new Omicron strain of coronavirus. The first 12 cases of the disease were detected in the country. Nine men and three women were reported infected. They have mild symptoms and none of them have been hospitalized.

An increase in the coronavirus incidence due to the Omicron strain is expected in Ukraine. And now the previous wave, caused by the Delta strain, is still coming to an end in the country. As of December 30, only six laboratory-confirmed cases of Omicron strain had been detected in Ukraine.
