Tragedy in Trier, Germany, December 2020

A tragedy occurred in the German city of Trier on Tuesday, as a driver of Land Rover mowed down a crowd, killing six people, including the nine-month-old baby. Bild reported that, adding that another 14 people suffered serious injuries.

The baby's mother is currently at the hospital. Among the other victims were two women and three men.

The police found out that the criminal acted intentionally and drove in zigzags so as to inflict as much damage as possible.

The culprit was detained four minutes after the crime. It appeared that he's a 51-year-old German citizen, the resident of the local district. According to prosecutor, he could be mentally ill. The suspect was drunk but the police still were able to interrogate him. There are no trails of political background to this crime so far, and the criminal's motives still remain uncertain.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry is now checking whether there are Ukrainians among the victims.

People gathered at the local cathedral for the memorial mass for the victims. They brought candles and left them on the stairs in front of the altar.
