Since the beginning of the year, the units of Ukraine's State Emergency Service have seized and destroyed 49,577 explosive items, including 646 aviation bombs. The authority's press office reported that on Wednesday morning.

It is noted that most frequently, the citizens find explosives that belong to the times of WWI and WWII.

Besides, the engineers continue clearing mines in the liberated territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Due to the frequent encounters with explosives, the pyrotechnical specialists warn the civilians from making any contact with the suspicious items, moving them, putting them into liquid, burying them in the ground or covering them with anything. It is also not recommended to dismantle the item or apply any sound, light or mechanic effects on it.

Earlier, Ukraine's Defense Ministry's department for environmental safety and counter-mine activity reported that 1,858 people have suffered the consequences of mishandling explosives in Donbas since April 2014. 482 of these people deceased; the number of fatalities includes 21 children.

The Ukrainian government assumed it might take 10-15 years to fully clear the occupied territories of Donbas of the live landmines.
