Several people drank antiseptic in Russia, victims reported

In Russian Yakutia region, nine people were poisoned after drinking an antiseptic. Seven people have died. This was reported by the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.

"On November 19, 2020, in the village of Tomtor, Tattinsky district, 9 cases of poisoning with an alcohol-containing substance were registered, including 7 with a lethal outcome," the message says.

It was preliminarily established that citizens purchased a 5 liter canister with an alcohol-containing substance "Skin antiseptic for hands" and consumed it inside. After the incident, the remainder of the antiseptic, which caused deaths, was sent for examination.

"A quantitative chemical analysis has established a methanol content of 69%. Methyl alcohol can cause acute poisoning with death when inhaled, swallowed; irritates the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and eyes," the service added.

So, when taken orally, the lethal dose of methanol for a person is 30 grams. However, severe poisoning, accompanied by blindness, can be caused by 5-10 grams of the substance. In this regard, Rospotrebnadzor urged citizens to take antiseptics only for external use.

According to worldometers, 2 064 748 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Russia, of which 35 778 were fatal.
