Russian coast guard ship damaged during clash in Sea of Azov

Both the Ukrainian tugboat and Russia’s Federal Security Service coast guard ship were damaged during the clashes of ships in the Sea of Azov. Former Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Serhiy Haiduk reported this.  

‘According to the information I obtain, one of the coast guard boats of the Federal Security Service was damaged during the clashes. It was Amethyst patrol boat and now it is being repaired as an emergency ship,’ Haiduk claimed.

Ukrainian Navy reported that the ships of the Russian Federation performed blatantly aggressive acts against the ships of the Ukrainian Navy, which have been carrying out a scheduled transition from Odesa port to Mariupol port in the Sea of Azov. In particular, Don border guard cruiser rammed the Ukrainian armored artillery boat, which led to the damage of the main engine, planting and accommodation rail, life float is lost.  

The Ukrainian agency claimed that it informed about the intention to make the transition in advance in accordance with international standards in order to ensure the safety of navigation.

At the same time, Russia’s FSB claimed that three Ukrainian warships “have illegally entered the territorial waters of Russia and headed to the Kerch Strait”. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that they regard the aggressive actions of the ships of the Russian Federation as a violation of the norms of the UN Charter and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
