The first battalion of the 97th Regiment of the 7th Airborne Assault (Mountain) Division of the Russian airborne troops will be deployed in the Crimean city of Dzhankoy in 2017. This was announced by Chairman of the Duma Committee on Defense, former commander of the Airborne Troops, Vladimir Shamanov, TASS reports.
"In accordance with the decision of board of the Ministry of Defense, next year we will begin the formation of separate battalion of the 97th Airborne Assault Regiment, recreated as part of the 7th Airborne Division in Dzhankoy. It is planned that by the end of 2017 this battalion will be formed", said Shamanov.
According to him, the entire 97th Regiment, which was hit by a reduction in the late 1990s, will be re-created on the basis of the battalion for a few years.
The Russian Federation said that the decision on re-establishment of the regiment was made in connection with the alleged high probability of provocations in Crimea by the Ukrainian security services.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia revives Soviet military installations in the occupied Crimea and builds new bases.
