Renowned journalist Andriy Kulykov beaten, robbed in Kyiv

The attackers have already been detained. They face up to six years in prison

Two malefactors beat and robbed the well-known journalist of "Hromadske Radio" Andriy Kulykov on Peremohy Avenue in Kyiv as the National Police in Kyiv reported.

"The attackers approached the victim and asked for a cigarette. Upon refusal, they beat the man, took three thousand hryvnias ($108.99), a bank card, and a cell phone. Now the accused could face up to six years in jail," noted the law enforcement agencies.

In a commentary to Detector Media, Kulykov confirmed that he was attacked on January 7. However, he does not connect the incident with his professional activities.

"My condition is very normal. Already yesterday I was hosting my program "Time of the Year", the police report appeared only by the evening, January 10, in fact, it happened as early as Friday morning. Half an hour after the incident I was already at the police, the law enforcers worked very quickly and efficiently," Kulykov said.

The police said that the defendants were detained under Article 208 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine. They are a 23-year-old native of the Mykolaiv region, previously convicted of robbery, theft, and drug trafficking, as well as a 23-year-old resident of the Volyn region, who is accused of theft.

Currently, law enforcement officers are verifying the involvement of two other people in the commission of this criminal offense.

As we reported, the National Police sent 17 criminal proceedings regarding crimes against journalists to the court during the nine months of 2021.
