The International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security in Lviv region hosted the opening ceremony of Rapid Trident 2019 drills. 112 Ukraine TV channel's reporter said this from the scene in western Ukraine.
The joint U.S.-Ukrainian exercises will be running for two weeks in different parts of Yavorivsky firing range. This year's drills involve more than 3,000 Ukrainian militaries. Most of them are members of the Mountain Assault Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Army. The majority of fighters are also the combat veterans in the Joint Forces Operation.
Some 500 militaries from 13 NATO countries will join the drills; they come from USA, Canada, Bulgaria, Georgia, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Germany, Denmark, Turkey and the UK.
Ukrainian and U.S. officers, Oleksandr Zhakun and Timothy Cleveland, will be the one in charge of the exercises.
600 vehicles and four Mil M-8 helicopters will be involved.
The exercise will last until September 28.
