For PCR testing, a smear is taken from the oropharynx, and if the virus is concentrated in the lower respiratory tract, a negative test result may be false. Minister of Health Maksyym Stepanov said this during a briefing broadcasted by 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"The reliability of the result is also affected by compliance with the conditions for selection and transportation of biological material to the laboratory. According to various sources, up to 20-25% of the results of PCR studies can be false-negative," he said.
