Zelensky signs law on development of agricultural cooperatives

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed Law No. 819-IX "On Agricultural Cooperation", which the Verkhovna Rada adopted on July 21, 2020. The press service of the President's Office reports.

The document regulates legal relations for the creation, operation, and termination of agricultural cooperatives, taking into account international standards and the best world practices.

The document also establishes the principles for the creation and operation of agricultural cooperatives, in particular:

  • democracy, voluntariness, and openness of cooperative membership;
  • mandatory participation of a member in the economic and other activities of cooperatives and their associations;
  • autonomy, independence, the cooperation of cooperatives;
  • promoting their development (education, training, information) and taking into account the interests of the territorial community.

Amendments are also made to the Economic and Civil Codes of Ukraine, the laws of Ukraine "On Farming", "On Cooperation" and "On Personal Agriculture", which, in particular, provide for the elimination of legislative conflicts, the settlement of transitional relations between the activities of agricultural production cooperatives, agricultural cooperatives, and their associations at the time of entry into force of this law.

The introduction of the law will contribute to the development of agricultural cooperatives, increase their market share in the production and sale of agricultural products. This law should also strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium-sized producers and accelerate the development of rural areas.
