The poverty rate in Ukraine may exceed 50 % due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This pessimistic forecast belongs to the recent report by UNICEF.

According to the data of the organization, before the pandemic, the rate on the absolute criterium made 27.2 %. Under the best scenario, it could grow to 43.6 %; under the worst, 50.8 %.

As for the children in poverty, it is expected that the rate will make from 51.3 to 58.5%. Before the pandemic, it made 32.9.

According to UNICEF estimates, with all else being equal, Ukraine could expect that under the east threatening scenario, the number of those living in poverty, would increase by 6.3 million citizens, including 1.4 million children. Under the more threatening scenario, this rate will increase by 9 million, including 1.8 million kids. In the worst possible case, Ukraine will be thwarted back by three years - in terms of combating the poverty rate.

As of 9 a.m. May 18, Ukraine reports the overall number of 18,616 cases of infection with Covid-19. The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine reported that on Monday morning.

535 people succumbed to the disease. Another 5,276 recovered from coronavirus.
