There will be autocephaly for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine; President Petro Poroshenko said this at a briefing on Thursday.

'The Lord saw the struggle of the Ukrainian nation for independence; he heard our prayers and duly appreciated our efforts, It was His will that His Excellency Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Synodus of Constantinople Mother Church said 'Yes,' the long-time expected response. There will be the autocephaly for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine,' the head of the state said.

He stressed that the decision of the Patriarchate and the Synodus has eventually dismissed the imperial illusions and chauvinistic fantasies of Moscow, not based on a single church law document on Ukraine, which it poses a canonical territory of the Russian Church.'

'As His Holiness Bartholomew once wrote, 'the worldwide Orthodoxy is a constellation of independent and equal national churches.' And, dear friends, finally, the Ukrainian star will shine in this constellation, too. The decision on the autocephaly is already made. I repeat, the decision on the autocephaly is made,' Poroshenko said.

On October 11, the Ecumenical Patriarchate's press office confirmed this religious authority renewed 'the decision already made that the Ecumenical Patriarchate proceeds to the granting of Autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine.'
