The Ukrainian president visited Sloviansk and Kramatorsk (Donetsk region), the towns that were liberated from pro-Russian mercenaries on July 5, 2014. Delivering a speech on the occasion, he said that the TV tower at Karachun Mountain should be restored in two months. The restoration works are now under way.
In July 2014, Ukrainian troops held lines around the TV and radio broadcasting station at Karachun Mountain. Paratroopers, snipers, artillerists and many others defended their positions and specifically the tower; as the enemy treated it as the main target for artillery, and tried to bring it down to cut the locals from Ukrainian TV and radio programs.
‘They were afraid of this TV tower, which let us tell people the truth. I instructed the local authorities to restore the tower in no more than two months. This is the right of the people and we should protect it,’ Petro Poroshenko said.
