During the weekly Sunday sermon, Pope Francis honored the memory of the Holodomor victims in Ukraine and declared that he was praying for peace in Ukraine. This is reported by Radio Vatican.

"I welcome the Ukrainian society, which recalls the tragedy of the Holodomor - the hunger death caused by the Stalin regime, which took millions of lives. I pray for Ukraine for the power of faith help to heal the wounds of the past and spread the peace ways today," the pontiff said.

We recall that every year on November 25 Ukraine honors the memory of the victims of Holodomor.

There were three Holodomors in the twentieth century: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, 1946-1947. At the same time, the status of the Holodomor has only the genocide of 1932-1933. Events of 1921-1923 and 1946-1947 are qualified as a mass famine, the genocidal nature of which has not yet been proven.

The Holodomor lasted 17 months - from April 1932 to November 1933. Researchers have not yet decided on the number of victims: they erported the numbers from 1.8 to 10 million. Most experts believe that from 3 to 3.5 million people died from hunger.
