Owner of the Bimex shop in Barlinek, Poland Jerzy Bitel hung a sign that urged to check every citizen of Ukraine at the cash-desk. The photo with a sign quickly expanded all over the social networks as WP.Finanse reported.
‘Every citizen of Ukraine will be checked when they leave the cash desk’, as it is written in the Polish and Ukrainian languages.
The center of monitor of racism and xenophobia immediately informed the prosecutor’s office, ombudsman and the Embassy of Ukraine to Poland on the situation as the center reported at Facebook.
The owner of the shop explained that he hung the sign when a citizen of Ukraine stole two pockets with food. The sign was translated by the Ukrainians who work in the shop.
‘Actuall, it hung for a day but it is already removed. I said to make it impulsive, too fast. The content of the sign should not be like that. I sincerely apologize in front of all people who are insulted. The sign with such content should not exist’, he said.
Jerzy Bitel added that the sign with the similar inscription hung there for 30 years and there were never some complaints. According to Bitel, ‘the sign should not appeal to the Ukrainians, it should be only in the Ukrainian language’.
He also said the Ukrainians are the problem of his shop and whole Barlink and emphasized that they steal more often the Polish citizens.
‘A polish citizen can steal something once in a month. The Ukrainians steal something even four times a week. I had to hire two additional securities’, the owner of the Bimex shop complained.
The center of monitor of racism and xenophobia wrote that ‘it is a scandalous case of discrimination based on the nation’. The organization assured that they will put all efforts that the persons who are responsible for the placing of the sing will carry the criminal sanctions.
Totally, more than 330 000 foreigners work in Poland. Ukrainians make 68% of this amount. 227 000 of Ukrainians paid the taxes to the Department of the Social Assurance in the first quarter of 2017 and it is more in 90% in comparison with the previous period of time.
