Law enforcement officers discovered a cache with freshly produced weapons near an abandoned house in Spaske village in Zaporizhia region, reports the press office of the National Police in Zaporizhia region.
It is noted that a squad of mine clearance specialists seized 14 F-1 grenade cases, one RGN hand grenade case, 10 standardized hand grenade fuses, three capsule detonators and 10 TNT blocks.
‘It is decided to initiate a criminal proceeding under part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (about the illegal handling of weapons, military supplies or explosives),’ reads the message.
Spaske village, where the arms stash was found, is located near a former military base in Novobohdanivka village, Melitopol District. In 2004, a fire with the following explosion of ammunition occurred at the deports of A2985 military unit; that lead to deaths of five people. The shells that were exploding almost a week damaged more than 2,000 houses, causing a loss of $114,2 million. The same incident happened again in 2005 but with fewer scale effects: a fire with the further detonation of artillery shells on the territory of the 275th artillery ammunition storage base was localized in 3.5 hours. Also, a spontaneous ignition of ammunition occurred yet four times on the territory of the military base in early August 2006.
In 2008, the military court of the Dneipropetrovsk garrison sentenced former commander of the 2985 military unit Serhii Lylov and the soldier of the same unit Oleh Selin to 6 years in prison. They were found guilty and incompetent of preventing the explosions of 2004. The former military men served their sentences at a high-security prison.
