The video that the witnesses filmed shows Brooks fighting two law enforcement officers, grabbing a stun gun from one of them, and running into a restaurant. According to another video, already shot on a policeman’s video recorder, Brooks is aiming at him from a stun gun and a law enforcement officer shoots a man.
An African American was hospitalized, but doctors could not save him, and the man died. The official investigation of the incident is still ongoing, it is being investigated by investigators from the state of Georgia. Two police officers who took part in Brooks's detention were fired.
Later, a protest rally against racism and in memory of George Floyd, who was killed earlier in Minneapolis, which took place in the city, escalated into riots, and demonstrators set fire to a fast food restaurant, next to which a policeman shot at Brooks. Law enforcers used tear gas. Several dozen protesters stood on the roadway, and firefighters for a long time could not drive up to the burning building to extinguish it.
After this incident, Atlanta Police Chief Erica Shields resigned. The resignation was announced by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. According to her, Erica Shields filed for her a letter of resignation.
