Police in Odesa detained members of a criminal group who committed an armed robbery in the city center in 2018 and took 160,000 U.S.dollars. The press service of the National Police of Ukraine reported that.
It is noted that during the investigation, a criminal group was established, which included five men aged 35 to 43 years. The two organizers (born in 1982 and 1980) committed armed robbery in 2018; they wounded collectors from firearms and took 160,000 dollars.
Investigating this attack, the criminal investigation department received information that the group planned another attack on March 18, 2020 - at the branch of one of the banks located in the center of Odessa. As noted, the attackers bought firearms, masks, etc. During the attack, they planned to use several cars - one for arriving at the crime scene, the second for flight, the third for unhindered movement after robbery.
"On March 18, they left one car in the Odessa region to use it after the attack, and drove to Odesa in other cars. They had firearms, a radio station, radar equipment, etc. All this time, criminal investigators were already watching them," the police said.
Arriving in the afternoon, the group members put on masks and took firearms, but law enforcement officers prevented the attack. During the detention, the suspects tried to escape, and law enforcers used service weapons. However, despite the damage to the wheel, the car with the attackers continued to move and, trying to get away from the chase, damaged several cars of the townspeople. As a result of the use of service weapons and road accidents, none of the civilians and law enforcement officers were injured.
During the searches, fake documents were seized from the suspects, in particular the certificates of the FSB officers, a GSM signal search device, camouflage clothing. They found a gun and machine gun, cartridges, a knife, a hammer, balaclava, etc. in their cars. A car, weapons and other items that the two leaders of the group used during the attack in 2018 were also seized. In addition, it was established that one of the two organizers is wanted on the territory of the Russian Federation, and the Moldova law enforcement authorities are looking for the other member of the group.
At the moment, criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Art. 14 h. 4 tbsp. 187 (robbery) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine were opened. All five intruders are in a temporary detention center. Their involvement in the commission of similar crimes throughout Ukraine is established.
As we reported before, the suspect in organizing the murder of Kateryna Handzyuk, Oleksiy Levin, was brought to Ukraine from Bulgaria, as Sofia granted the request for extradition.
