Pfizer and BioNTech companies that develop their vaccines against Covid-19 will be appealing to the regulatory bodies asking them to let them give the people a third shot of their drug.
"The companies expect to publish more definitive data soon as well as in a peer-reviewed journal and plan to submit the data to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), EMA (European Medicines Agency) and other regulatory authorities in the coming weeks", reads the statement cited by France 24.
According to Pfizer and BioNTech, the initial data of tests show that the third shot increases antibodies level by 5-10 times compared to the effect caused by the two first doses.
The companies expect that the third dose would be just as effective against the Delta strain, which quickly became the dominating one.
"While protection against severe disease remained high across the full 6 months, a decline in efficacy against symptomatic disease over time and the continued emergence of variants are expected," says the companies' joint statement.
