Pfizer and BioNTech companies started testing their vaccine from coronavirus on children aged from six months to 12 years. This is done in order to expand the application of the drug to this age group, too, writes Reuters.
Initially, the companies plan to test security of their vaccine with double injections in three various doses (10, 20 and 30 mg) within the research of Phases 1 and 2. 144 test subjects will participate. According to Pfizer representative Sharon Castillo, the children already received thgeir first injections on Wednesday, March 24. The company hopes to get the results of their tests in the second half-year of 2021.
Earlier, Moderna company began to test their vaccine against Covid-19 on children aged from six months to 11 years old.
The vaccination of children is considered critically important to reach the level of collective immunity that is capable of stopping the pandemic. Though the risk of serious illness among children is lower than that in adults, the risk of transmitting the disease is sill there, especially among the teenagers.
