A campaign against the Olympics in Tokyo is underway in Japan. The online petition calling for the cancelation of the sport event in the Japanese capital collected almost 200,000 votes over several days.

The authors insist that the risk of the disease spreading is too high.

"The figures show that the outbreak of Covid-19 is not under control. In spite of the fact that the vaccination began in the end of the previous year, it is only spread in the developed countries. Thus, it is too soon to expect the end of the pandemic", the document says.

Besides, the state of emergency can be extended in Tokyo and other cities in Japan. The government plans to boost the quarantine restrictions in four prefectures after May 11, as the doctors report a rapid increase of the spread of the disease.

According to Reuters, sociological surveys confirm that most of the country's population stand against holding the Olympics.

"We constantly call for avoiding the spread of coronavirus, the protection of lives and the use of available wasy to stop the Olympics", the outlet cites Kenji Utsunomia, the organizer of the online petition.

In spite of these moves, organizers of the event repeatedly claimed that the Games will take place.

The Olympics in Tokyo were supposed to take place in Tokyo last summer. But the pandemic made the organizers re-schedule the Games for 2021. For now, the estimated dates are July 23-August 8.

In March, the organizers of the Olympics in Tokyo decided to hold the event without foreign fans.
