Employees of the New York University (NYU) Langone Health System and Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in New York decided to establish the tie between the mental disorders, including affective (affective disorders), anxiety and schizophrenia spectrum disorders and mortality among adults who infected with coronavirus. Afterward, they found out that the risk of death is increased in all three groups of psychiatric patients, especially with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
Totally, the data of 7,348 patients with coronavirus was used; the average age – 54 years. Besides, some patients also had ICD-19 diagnosis: schizophrenia spectrum disorders (75 people; 1%); affective disorders (564; 7.7%) or anxiety disorders (360;4.9%).
Mortality was defined as death or appointment to hospice in 45 days after positive test for coronavirus. As a result, it turned out that in comparison with Covid-19 patients without schizophrenia spectrum disorders, the patients with disorders had a twice higher risk.
Moreover, it is noted that people with mental disorders often suffer from other illnesses, including cardiovascular.
Over the past 24 hours, 5,082 people have contracted coronavirus in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the pandemic in Ukraine, 1,232,246 people have contracted the disease, 1,055,406 (+9,933) have overcome it, 23,229 (+140) - have succumbed to it.
