Over 54,000 Ukrainians sickened with measles in 2018

The Healthcare Ministry urges parents to vaccinate children and observe terms of the vaccinations’ schedule

2,154 persons, including 865 adults and 1,289 children sickened with measles last week according to the date of Public Health Center of the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine. Totally, 54, 481 people got sick (20,204 adults and 34,277 children) in 2018 as the Healthcare Ministry reported.

The majority of people are sick in the regions, where the coverage with the scheduled vaccine is the lowest. Particularly, the highest rates of the incidence are observed in Lviv (11,873 people: 3,378 adults and 8,495 children), Ivano-Frankivsk (5,617 people: 1,496 adults and 4,121 children), Zakarpattia (4,733 people: 988 adults and 3,745 children), Ternopil (3,658 people: 1,268 adults and 2,390 children), Vinnytsia (3,422 people: 1,212 adults and 2,210 children) and Chernivtsi (3,384 people: 1,117 adults and 2,267 children) regions.

As of December 1, the number of children, who got the first dose of the vaccine again measles, mumps and rubella, is 84,1%; the number of those who got two doses of this vaccine made 83,9%.

15 people, including four adults and eleven children, died from the complications of the disease.

Earlier, we reported that a three-year-old boy died from measles at Odesa City Infectious Diseases Hospital. He became the third child in Odesa who died from this disease in 2018. In total, four residents of Odesa died from measles.
