Orthodox and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Christians are celebrating the Baptism of Jesus today, Jan. 19.
According to legends, this is the day when Jesus Christ turned 30 years old and was baptised in the Jordan river by John the Baptist. After this, there came the voice of God from Heaven, who named Jesus his son and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the form of a pigeon.
Its the third and last big festivity of the Christmas cycle. Traditionally, on this day religious people sanctify water at churches, and the bravest ones take a breed swim in ice holes at water reservoirs (rivers and lakes). The water is believed to have healing properties and by plunging into it three times the person will be safe from illness for the whole year.
