People who are obese or overweight are at increased risk of death or severe illness from Covid-19. This was reported by the European Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO).
"A recent study found that being overweight or obese puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, as well as from many other life-threatening diseases," the message informs.
It is noted that overweight is one of the factors of the high mortality rate from coronavirus: the disease has already taken the lives of more than a million people.
The main reason, according to experts, lies in the lack of physical activity and excessive consumption of foods saturated with salt, sodium, sugar and trans fats. These problems were further exacerbated by forced isolation, as many people stopped exercising. Due to lack of work, some are also forced to save on food.
WHO fears that following the Covid-19 pandemic, the world will face a pandemic of obesity, which is fraught with serious consequences in infectious diseases, dramatically increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes, and also leads to a number of psychological problems.
As we reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the government does not plan to impose strict quarantine restrictions, despite the increase in Covid-19 cases.
Zelensky noted that the introduction of a lockdown in the country could completely stop the economy. He also announced the production of Ukrainian vaccine against coronavirus.
