The driver who mowed down a crowd of bystanders in Manhattan recognized that he committed the attack in the name of the Islamic State; according to CNN, this is what his note says, which he left in the truck.
‘The suspect was identified by two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. He's from Uzbekistan in Central Asia but had been living in the US since 2010, sources said,’ the outlet wrote.
New York mayor Bill de Blasio described the attack as ‘an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror, aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them’.
The Manhattan attack, which fell on Halloween, claimed lives of eight people; six died on the scene, two passed away later at a hospital. Another eleven people sustained injuries of various degrees of severity. Saipov, who was armed with a paintball shotgun and an air-driven rifle, got himself shot in the abdomen by the police. He was taken to a hospital; so far, it is unknown what kind of ties there are between Saipov and the ISIS.
