The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo

James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo were awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation. This was reported on the website of The Nobel Prize.

"Until the discoveries made by the 2018 Medicine Laureates, progress into clinical development was modest. “Immune checkpoint therapy” has revolutionised cancer treatment and has fundamentally changed the way we view how cancer can be managed," the  message on Twitter says.

It was noted that cancer kills millions of people every year and is one of humanity’s greatest health challenges. By stimulating the ability of our immune system to attack tumour cells, this year’s Nobel Prize laureates have established an entirely new principle for cancer therapy.

As it was repored earlier, Lech Wałęsa, the Polish leader in 1990-1995, the holder of Nobel Peace Prize offered to nominate Ukrainian movie maker and political prisoner Oleg Sentsov for this prize. 

'Sentsov supported Euromaidan, stood for Ukraine as part of democratic Europe. He peacefully protested against the annexation of his native Crimea by Russia, and then he was arrested by Russian special services. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison due to the unfair trial, in spite of the fact that the witness recalled his testimony, given under pressure', reads the message.    

He also recalled that more than a hundred days ago, Sentsov announced a hunger strike, demanding to release Ukrainian political prisoners from Russia.
