The new safe confinement – the so-called ‘arch’ – is almost ready. It is to cover the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, specifically the destroyed 4th unit, which exploded during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The new construction is also supposed to cover the shelter object over the destroyed reactor of the 4th unit.
Ostap Semerak, Ukraine’s environment minister reported this on his Facebook page. According to him, the arch will be covering the NPP from November 3 and on.
‘The works are performed duly and they will be over in time. I’d like to praise the Ukrainian engineers and constructors who designed and brought to life the unique technology of the shelter over the 4th unit. Thanks to its construction, the arch and the power unit will connect quite hermetically’, the official posted.
Semerak also announced plans to cease using Russian gas in favour of alternative renewable energy sources. According to him, an incinerator, the device using the solid fuel, is already operating in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Besides, there are plans to set the solar batteries across the exclusion zone.
Currently, there are some 10,000 people working in the exclusion zone, Semerak said.
