Another case of peril of rare birds is observed in the Askania-Nova national park (Kherson region, southern Ukraine). The National Police workers found 12 dead birds in the area, including nine gray cranes and three red roody shelducks.
According to the police press office, the birds could have eaten plant seeds, which the farmers poisoned to get rid of the rodents. Currently, Kharkiv-based forensics are looking into the actual causes of death of these birds.
As of March 22, law enforcers have been investigating three cases about the peril of rare birds from the Red Book of Ukraine; all these facts were observed in Askania-Nova.
In January, the police began a pre-trial investigation of the fact of peril of 185 gray cranes in Askania-Nova. Then, in early March, they found out that 369 summer birds deceased in the national park. Thus, it is the third such case reported since the beginning of the year.
