Official Rabat denies the purchase or use of Pegasus spyware

Prosecutor General of Morocco has promised to start the investigation of “ungrounded accusations” that the country used Israeli Pegasus spyware for espionage as Reuters reported.

The prosecutor said that messages include “serious accusations and allegations" in "cases undermining the higher interests of the kingdom".

The information about the involvement of Morocco in espionage over the leader of France could inflict harm to its relations with large European allies after recent arguments with Spain and Germany.

Moreover, the journalist non-commercial organization Forbidden Stories reported that King of Morocco Mohammed VI and other members of the royal family also became the victims of the Moroccan client of NSO Company.

Official Rabat denies the purchase or use of Pegasus spyware.

On Wednesday, Morocco accused mass media and human rights groups that wrote about Pegasus of "hateful attacks" aimed at putting Rabat "under their control" and demanded they provide material evidence for the allegations.  

As we reported, about 50,000 phone numbers that could be spied through Israeli Pegasus software include the numbers of a dozen of prime ministers, three presidents, and a king.

NSO Company-developer stated that it has 60 clients from state agencies in 40 countries. According to the representatives of the firm, anyway, the aim of Pegasus software are terrorists and criminals such as pedophiles, drug lords, and human traffickers. The company stated that it bans the prosecution of law-abiding persons, including officials, who hold usual work.

On July 18, the results of the journalistic investigation Project Pegasus were published. It was stated that the authorities of autocratic states and various special services used Israeli Pegasus software to spy on activists, journalists, and oppositionists.
