According to the operational data of the Public Health Center of the Health Ministry of Ukraine, more than 1,500 people, including about 1,000 of adults, got sick with measles.
The only way to stop the outbreak of measles is vaccination according to the Health Ministry. Meanwhile, the ministry states that there are enough vaccines for the planned and enhanced immunization in all regions of Ukraine, emphasizing that the health of the Ukrainians depends on the level of the vaccination in the country. It is necessary for the forming of the collective immunity to make the level of the vaccination to reach 95-98%. The ministry noted that the largest growth of the incidence with measles in 2018 is in the regions when the level of the coverage of the planned vaccination is the lowest.
According to statistics of the ministry, mostly people get sick with measles in Lviv (almost 8,000 ill people), Ivano-Frankivsk (about 4,000 people), Zakarapattia (3,500 people), Odesa (about 2,500 people) regions, Kyiv (almost 2,500 people) and Ternopil region (about 2,000).
“Children at the age of 5 up to 9 are in the zone of the particular risk, so it is very important for children to be vaccinated in time,” the ministry noted.
Measles is dangerous and very contagious virus disease and there is no medicine against it. The complications of this disease can lead to lethal consequences. The only way to prevent the complications and death from measles is vaccination. Children and adults without vaccination in the zone of the risk.
“As at November 8, 2018, there are 586,260 dozes of the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. All vaccines are qualitative and effective, they supplied by UNICEF. For the forming of the collective immunity to make the level of the vaccination to reach 95-98%. It is necessary to be vaccinated according to the Calendar of prophylactic immunization and all children under 18-year of all can catch up the missed vaccinations for free as well as the adults from the group of the risk – soldiers, partakers of the Joint Forces Operation, students, educators and doctors,” the Health Ministry informed.
The number of cases of measles in January-September 2018 has increased 17 times in comparison with the same period of time in 2017.
Earlier, 45 school students and a pregnant teacher got sick with measles in Rukshyna village, Chernivtsi region, southwestern Ukraine. Later, it turned out that the majority of the affected were not vaccinated.
Moreover, 53 children fell ill with measles in Petranka village, Ivano-Frankivsk region, western Ukraine.
Besides, 28 children got sick with measles in one of the Vinnytsia region's schools. The measles outbreak is related to the fact that parents refuse to vaccinate their children.
