Opening of the monument to Holodomor 1932 - 1933 victims took place in Hungary on Friday, November 16, in the city of Szeged. This is reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.

The ceremony was attended by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of External Economy and Foreign Affairs of Hungary Levente Magyar and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary Lyubov Nepop.

Magyar called the Holodomor an experiment of the Soviet government and stressed that Ukraine has passed "even more trials than the Hungarians" over the past decades.

"Ukraine survived in this test, and in the 90s gained independence; today it is an independent state, which, like the Hungarians, can hope for a happier future. History has proved that Ukrainian people are strong enough not to go against someone in order to strengthen their own identity, "he said.

Ukrainian Ambassador Lyubov Nepop on her Facebook page reported that the monument was installed in the park of the central cathedral on Dome Square. This territory belongs to the world cultural heritage.

"For me personally, it was deeply symbolic in today's grand opening that Ukrainian and Hungarian officers took part in it together. I believe that in all other situations we will also stand side by side, honoring the victims of the tragedies of the past, resisting present and preventing future threats, "she wrote.

Earlier, a memorial to the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine was opened in Toronto, Canada.
