The largest Ukrainian mining and smelting company Metinvest is modernizing the blast furnace production at the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, reducing gas consumption and emissions into the atmosphere. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine agency.
The blast furnace №5 of Metinvest Group’s Azovstal Iron and Steel Works is being completely shut off on June 5. It will be put out of service for good. After the cooling process is finished, the blast furnace will be dismantled.
According to a company press release, two blast furnaces will be stopped at Azovstal: №5 will be put out of service, and №6 will be repaired.
At the same time, it is indicated that the production of the cast iron will fall on the modernized blast furnace №3, which will be launched soon.
Investments in modernization have reached more than $ 145 million. New equipment will enable blast furnace №3 to become one of the most environmentally friendly in Ukraine.
As it was reported earlier, in October 2018, Ukraine reduced steel production by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2017. Ukrainian metallurgists produced 1.788 million tons of steel, retaining 13th place in the world ranking, which includes 64 countries.
