Member of European Parliament Maximilian Krah commented on the attack on the journalist of Newsone TV channel Violetta Tovkes on November 28 during the ceremony of commemoration of the Holodomor victims. He said this on the air of Newsone TV channel.
He said he was shocked by what was happening and noted that if Ukraine wants to become a member of the European Union, it must demonstrate that it fights against such violence and that guarantees the freedom of press and media and condemn such actions.
“When I saw this video, I was really shocked about it because it’s a brutal attack in a city where people are gathering. And we deal a lot with the problem of violence against independent media. And it’s crucial to guarantee that such a thing could never happen in any civilized city. So we want to see an official action by the authorities,” the MEP said.
He stressed that he would call his human rights colleagues and ask them for an assessment of the situation. In addition, the MPs will raise this issue in the European Parliament to understand the scale of the problem.
“We will now give it to the committee which deals with it, exchange ideas concerning Ukraine. And I will call my colleagues who deal with human rights and legal aspects and civil rights. And I will tell them so that they have a view on it. We know that this s not the first attack. Especially, your channel is quite often attacked by extremists. But having it now visible on a video clip has a new quality and it shows the depth of the problem and we want to see answers. And I am sure that my colleagues and the committee that deals with such issues will also require answers. So that attack will have consequences,” Krah said.
Earlier it was reported that Newsone journalist was attacked and knocked out microphone at a ceremony honoring Holodomor victims.
