The authorities have neither resources nor capacities to fight against fires in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform – For Life and MP stated.
“It causes flagrant indignation, the things that happen in the Chornobyl zone because they are putting out a fire for ten days. I know from the workers of the State Emergency Service system who directly state that as for today, there is an insufficient amount of recourses, capabilities, forces, which may fight this scourge that develops on the wave of the coronavirus infection, on the wave of the economic crisis and absence of some resources. Pay attention, if, on the first days, the fire was extinguished on the square of 20 hectares then according to recent reports on yesterday and today, the fire and fireplaces extend for about 100 km distance. Think, how serious this result is and how huge problem is, which exists for today and which should be overcome by the authorities but they do not handle it,” he said.
As we reported, the police identified the perpetrator of the fire in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. It turned out to be a 27-year-old citizen of Rahivka. He explained that he set fire to grass and garbage at three places for fun. Then, the fire was spread by wind further and he failed to extinguish it.
As we reported, earlier Victor Medvedchk stated that there's a chance that snap parliamentary and presidential elections could take place in Ukraine.
