Measles outbreak in Kyiv: 20 children became ill after visit of circus

More than 20 children sickened of measles after the visit of one of the circuses in Kyiv as the Department of the State Consumer Service of Ukraine in Kyiv reported.

'It was established from the epidemiological analysis that more than 20 ill children visited the circus from December 22, 2017 up to December 30, 2017, where one of the workers was also spotted to sicken of measles', the message said.

It is noted that the epidemiological investigation takes place in the circus. The situation is under control of the local authorities.

It is also reported that the children of different age groups are ill.

'11 cases spotted among the children of the preschool education institutions, 21 cases spotted among the school children and one teacher of the elementary school became ill.

The State Consumer Service of Ukraine in Kyiv noted that the majority of the ill people were not vaccinated due to the refusal.

Earlier it was reported that 3 382 people sickened of measles during 2017.

As we reported 54 people, including 43 children sickened of measles since the beginning of 2018.

Measles is is a highly contagious infection. Initial signs and symptoms typically include fever, often greater than 40 °C , cough, runny nose, and inflamed eyes. Complications occur in about 30% and may include diarrhea, blindness, inflammation of the brain, and pneumonia among others.
