An unknown young man attacked the synagogue in Mariupol, Donetsk region. The culprit was armed with an axe; he wounded the security guard. Moshe Reuven Azman, the Head Rabbi of Ukraine said so, commenting on the incident that took place on July 28.

According to Azman, the attacker entered the synagogue after the morning prayer. He attacked the security guard who moved towards him. The man hit the guard with the axe several times, but the latter managed to neutralize the aggressor.

"Thank God, the guard managed to grab the axe. We called the police, and the criminal is being sought now (...) There were unarmed people in the synagogue, but everyone survived. The guard is just a hero. Our community and I personally express our deepest gratitude to Richard Anatoliyoych Holomazov for protecting al those inside the building, putting his life at risk", said Menachem Mendl Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Mariupol.

It is also known that the culprit fled the scene, pelting the synagogue with packages with feces and sand. As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, he is at large.
