Malta announces achievement of herd immunity against Covid-19

Malta has vaccinated 70% of its adult population with at least one COVID-19 shot, becoming the first European Union country to achieve so-called herd immunity. Reuters stated citing Health Minister Chris Fearne.

“Malta has vaccinated 70% of its adult population with at least one COVID-19 shot, becoming the first European Union country to achieve so-called herd immunity, Health Minister Chris Fearne said on Monday,” the statement says.

According to the Minister, vaccines are being administered at a rate of one every five seconds. Forty-two percent of the adult population has received two doses.

He also announced that mandatory wearing of masks outdoors would be lifted on July 1 for vaccinated people, who received two doses of vaccine, as long as virus cases remain low.

As it was reported earlier, the European Union's vaccine task force chief said the bloc would be able to produce enough vaccines to achieve herd immunity of the EU's adult population by the middle of July.
