President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has threatened to cut off gas to the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline if the border with Belarus is closed, Interfax reports.

"And if we close the transit through Belarus? It will not pass through Ukraine: the Russian border is closed there. There are no roads through the Baltics. If we close it for the Poles and, for example, for the Germans, what will happen then? We must not stop at anything while defending our sovereignty and independence," Lukashenko said.

Lukashenko noted that the Yamal-Europe transnational main gas pipeline runs through Belarus, and that gas transit volumes from Russia to the west have increased significantly recently.

"We are heating Europe, and yet they are threatening us that they will close the border. And if we turn off natural gas there? Therefore, I would recommend the leadership of Poland, Lithuanians and other headless people to think before speaking," he said.

As it was reported, president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko asked Russia to involve strategic aviation in duty on borders of Belarus. According to him, Russian and Belarusian servicemen should monitor the "Baltic-Poland-Ukraine ring".
