The ranking of Ukraine's most polluted cities, which was released recently, cannot be treated quite objective and comprehensive - due to a number of reasons. Specifically, it is about the non-unified system of research in various cities, as well as different principles of assessment of the real environmental situation, Obozrevatel news agency reports.
The authors of the research refer to the data by the Central Geophysical Observatory named after Borys Sreznevsky; however, according to NGO Ekopatrul, there's not a single active page on the observatory's website, while the main page reflects only meteorological indexes.
The mentioned ranking is based absolutely different conditions of environmental monitoring. For instance, in Dnipropetrovsk region, there are automatic surveillance posts in Dnipro, Nikopol, Pavlohrad and Kryvyi Rih. The first three even have their own Telegram channels, where all relevant data is published. Besides, the information is released via ECOINFO portal, where one can learn about the conditions of atmosphere - anywhere in Dnipro. However, the data from stationary sources is submitted directly by enterprises, and it's not always up to date. In Kryvyi Rih, the resource center constantly refreshes the data.
In Zaporizhya, the situation is a bit more complicated, since there are only five surveillance stations across the city, and there are only devices used to collect samples. The samples are taken to labs, and the results are released only the following day; the lab only reports if the borderline admissible concentration of harmful substances is exceeded. Therefore, it is tough to learn the actual numbers. Such procedure is also employed in Lutsk, northwestern Ukraine.
Kherson and Mykolaiv regions are the only regions in Ukraine, where experts keep the track of heavy metals pollution levels. Odesa and Kharkiv do not even have their own observation stations.
In Kyiv region, the indexes are mostly approximate, since the four observation stations are located too close to Kyiv and do not always reflect the actual indexes across the rest of the region.
