The National Armed Forces of Latvia are ready for possible provocations during the Russian-Belarusian drills West-2017 that will take place in September. The Ministry of Defense of Latvia claimed this as Delfi reported.
'The Ministry received the invitation to send two observers from Latvia to the drills on August 2 but it does not mean that the openness and the clearness of the drills will be provided', the message reported.
12 700 militaries will take part in the Russian-Belarusian drills. However, the official numbers are exceeded in many times as it is known by experience. The NATO representatives think that about 100 000 militaries can take part in the drills.
The Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces Leonid Kalnins and the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed about the possible provocations.
The scenario of the drills provides the territorial defense of Russia and Belarus but the absence of the clearness remains to be the problem as the Foreign Ministry of Latvia claimed.
The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak claimed that Russia-Belarusian drills can become the beginning of the aggression towards any country of the Eastern Europe.
The joint drills of Russia and Belarus West-2017 are planned for September. The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Olexandr Turchynov claimed that the joint drills can be the preparation for the offensive operation. The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko assured the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that West-2017 will not become the preparation for invasion to Ukraine.
The Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov claimed that Russia has no intention to occupy Belarus under pretence of drills holding.
