Residents of Kyiv celebrated the Day of Baptization of Kyiv Rus; this church holiday is marked annually by thousands of believers across the country.

Metropolitan Onuphrius, the head of the Moscow Patriarchate Orthodox Church of Ukraine, held a service at the Volodymyrska Hill. It’s a legendary place where Prince Volodymyr  baptized the inhabitants of the city back in 988, thereby turning Kievan Rus into a citadel of Christianity in the Slavic lands.

After the prayer service on Volodymyrska Hill, the religious procession headed to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the biggest Orthodox shrine in Ukraine, where the events continued on the occasion of the memorable date.

The celebrations will be running in Kyiv on July 28 as well.
