The Theatre on Podil, one of Kyiv’s most beloved theatres, had its new front presented to the public.
The new look immediately caused a spell of dissatisfaction among many people. They gathered near the entrance on Tuesday morning, when the new front of the building designed by Ukrainian architect Oleg Drozdov, was opened. Some of those present shouted ‘Shame!’, while others applauded.
Activists already started collecting signatures of those willing to take away the new front of the theatre; people are dissatisfied with the fact that the modern black front of the building doesn’t match with the surrounding buildings of the 18th century. The respective petition is registered at Kyiv city council’s website.
‘Andriivsky descent is the common heritage of the Ukrainian people, the face of Kyiv and entire Ukraine. It’s one of the places tourists are going for when they come to Kyiv. It should be preserved as is, the way it was built in the 18th century. The new so-called ‘modernist’ fronts totally destroy its historical value and tourist attractiveness,’ says Viktor Nazarenko, the petition’s author. ‘Those officials who approved the construction of this front – thus, the destruction of Kyiv’s historical centre – should be now removed from their offices and later brought to criminal responsibility,’ the activist said.
