Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered security personnel to open fire without warning in event of further disturbances, adding that those who do not surrender will be "destroyed." Tokayev said this in a televised address.

Up to 20,000 “bandits” had attacked the financial capital Almaty and were destroying state property, Tokayev said.

He said peacekeeping forces sent from Russia and neighboring states had arrived on Kazakhstan’s request and were in the country on a temporary basis to ensure security.

Tokayev also thanked President Vladimir Putin as well as the leaders of China, Uzbekistan and Turkey for their assistance in quelling the uprising.

In the beginning of 2022 protests erupted in Kazakhstan after the increase in the price of liquefied gas. Demonstrators announced an indefinite action. Demands to reduce the price of gas have grown into calls for the resignation of the president and government. The Internet has been shut down in the country, law enforcement agencies seized military equipment, make arrests.

After a couple days of antigovernment protests the Cabinet of Kazakhstan has filed a resignation letter, and President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev accepted it.

Later, a state of emergency was declared in Kazakhstan by the new Cabinet. At the same time, Tokayev called for military assistance from the CSTO member states.
