In the most socially poor regions of southern Italy, mafia gangs began to participate in the charity work, supplying the unemployed with basic necessities: food, medicine, and hygiene products, The Guardian reported.
The reasons for such a wide gesture are not the Christian mercy of the legendary Italian mafia clans, but a completely natural situation: in the midst of total quarantine, people lose their jobs and get a semi-legal income in order to survive. Thanks to this, the mafia receives an additional influx of money, respectively, according to the old laws of justice, the leaders of the groups decided in this way to thank the needy segments of the population.
“Mafia bosses consider Italian cities to be their patrimony. But they help people to achieve their interests first and foremost,” Nicara Gratteri, investigator for combating mafia groups and the head of the prosecutor’s office of the province of Catanzaro said this.
As we reported before, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced the extension of lockdown in the country until May 3. This Conte said during a press conference on April 10
"We will extend the restrictive measures until May 3 - a difficult but necessary decision for which I take full political responsibility," Conte said.
